2016 Kentucky Derby Predictions

Today marks the 142nd running of the Kentucky Derby and the first Derby in many years to follow a successful Triple Crown. American Pharoah pulled off one of the great feats in recent sports history a year ago and it will be something we won't be forgetting anytime soon. But now, what will 2016 have to offer?

It's the first leg of the Triple Crown today at Churchill Downs. Who will win, place and show?

Live Odds

WIN - Mohaymen (12-1)
Once the favorite coming into this weekend, Mohaymen's stock dropped like a rock with a terrible performance in the Florida Derby. Color me somebody that considered that to be more of a fluke than an indicator of a disappointing Derby run so I think he's a good pick to win it this afternoon in Louisville.

PLACE - Mor Spirit (11-1)
Considering the track record of both the jockey (Gary Stevens) and the owner (Bob Baffert), Mor Spirit seems like a solid pick on those two pieces alone. The problem is that it also unfortunately drew Post 17 which as we know, no winner has ever won from that post. If he can keep up the pace of the rest of the field, if it is moving fast, he's got a shot

SHOW - Outwork (28-1)
You could spin Outwork's win in the Wood Memorial two ways. You could say that his win was impressive considering the awful track conditions in Ozone Park after getting off to a strong start, or you could also spin it as the result of a mediocre field. I have been hearing that he has looked terrific since arriving at Churchill Downs so I think he could be poised for a strong performance.
