Jeff Gordon will no longer race full-time after 2015

(RacingOne/ISC Archives)
As we count down the days to Speedweeks as we are less than a month away from the 57th running of the Daytona 500, one of the true legends of NASCAR will be embarking on his final full-time season in the Sprint Cup Series. Jeff Gordon made the announcement on Thursday morning at Hendrick Motorsports, the team Gordon has raced for since November 1992 when he made his Cup debut at Atlanta Motor Speedway in what may have been the greatest race in NASCAR history.

With Gordon's Cup career now winding down, one cannot overestimate the impact that Gordon made on the sport.

2015 NFL Mock Draft: 1st Edition

As we enjoy this week off as we prepare for the Super Bowl, it seems like a great opportunity to publish my first mock draft for 2015. There are 30 teams hoping to be in the positions that the Patriots and Seahawks will be in next Sunday in vying for the Lombardi Trophy and the NFL Draft, being held for the first time in Chicago this year, will be where those paths will begin. Let's have at it.

Are we overreacting to "Deflategate?"

Generally the week off between the conference championship games and the Super Bowl is a lighter NFL news week. Enter Deflategate. The story kicked off when veteran Indianapolis sports reporter Bob Kravitz reported that the NFL was investigating whether the Patriots deflated footballs in their demolition of the Colts in the AFC Championship Game. Then late last night, Chris Mortensen reported that the NFL found that 11 of the 12 footballs from the Patriots were under-inflated.

The takes are coming in hot as expected but I have to ask, are we making a bigger deal of this than we should?

How will CBS/Turner replace Greg Anthony for March Madness?

As many of you know already, CBS Sports college basketball analyst Greg Anthony was arrested on Friday afternoon in Washington on the charges of soliciting a prostitute, as first reported by WJLA. Anthony, who was inside the Beltway as he was scheduled to call Michigan State-Maryland on Saturday afternoon (he was subsequently replaced by Jim Spanarkel), was promptly place on an indefinite suspension by CBS and by Turner Sports, his NBA employer.

Now that Anthony will not be working any further college basketball contests, including the Final Four, only a year after he was promoted to the top broadcast crew, how will the CBS/Turner consortium replace him?

Does adding Max Scherzer make the Nationals the team to beat?

Tell me you saw this one coming: Max Scherzer coming to the nation's capital. As first reported by Jon Heyman of CBS late last night, Scherzer signed a seven-year contract with the Washington Nationals worth $210 million (he will receive the money over 24 years). Scherzer, 30, was perhaps the top pitcher on the free agent market this offseason after coming off two straight consecutive which included winning the 2013 AL Cy Young. The Nats have been one of the top teams in the NL two of the past three years, will the addition of Scherzer make them the favorites to win it all?

Gary Kubiak is the new head coach of the Denver Broncos

(Baltimore Sun)
Less than a week after "parting with" John Fox, the Denver Broncos have found their new head coach and it is a bit of a familiar face in Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak, as first reported by the Denver Post's Mike Klis. Kubiak, who not only was a veteran of the Denver coaching staff as he served 11 years under Mike Shanahan as offensive coordinator before becoming the head coach of the Texans, he also spent his entire nine-year career with the Broncos as the backup to GM John Elway. Here's my take.
