2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup: Quarterfinal Predictions
Saturday, July 18th - Baltimore
United States vs. Cuba - Fox, 5:00
The USMNT are the big favorites in this contest and it is easy to see why. While they largely sailed through the group stage, Cuba barely scrapped their way in by way of a tough victory over Guatemala on Wednesday. Given their -7 goal differential from group play, I do not hold high hopes for the Cubans here.
Pick: United States
Haiti vs. Jamaica - FS2, 8:00
The Reggae Boyz were a pleasant surprise during the group play in winning Group B with two wins and a draw. Meanwhile Les Grenadiers snuck into the knockout stage with a key 1-0 victory in their final match against Honduras. This looks to be a low-scoring contest and that only favors Jamaica as they have seen tremendous play in net.
Sunday, July 19th - East Rutherford
Trinidad & Tobago vs. Panama - FS1, 4:30
The Soca Warriors (what a nickname) were the surprise winners of Group C thanks to wins over Cuba and Guatemala and that wild draw with Mexico in which they tied the match in the 93rd minute after an own goal had giving El Tri the lead in the 90th. They certainly looked better than Panama did as they drew in all three of their contests. I like T&T to advance.
Pick: Trinidad & Tobago
Mexico vs. Costa Rica - FS1, 7:30
In what may be the best of the four quarterfinal matches, this should be a good one. Mexico scored ten goals during their group stage, including their 6-0 thrashing of Cuba and the wild 4-4 draw with Trinidad & Tobago while Costa Rica looked solid as always but not all that impressive as they saw draws in all three of their contests. I think Mexico with their potent offense may have the edge.
