2015 FIFA Women's World Cup: Quarterfinal Predictions

Just like that, we have arrived to the Quarterfinals in the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup and it will kick off (see that pun work?) on Friday afternoon. Only eight teams remain and only four will advance to the semifinals. Who will keep their World Cup dreams alive at the end of the weekend? Here are my predictions.

TV Schedule

Friday, June 26th
Germany vs. France - Fox, 4:00
If you watch one game besides the USWNT game, of course, it has to be this contest as it only features the teams ranked first and third in the world. Both teams have been able to score their fair share of goals and have played solid defense as well. France has the ability to pull what would be an upset but in the end, I don't think they can put it all together to take out the Germans.
Pick: Germany

United States vs. China PR - Fox, 7:30
The Americans should win this game but do not rule out China here. Without Megan Rapinoe, the US could struggle to score and China plays a conservative defensive style of soccer and a low score can play right into their hands. That said, China has struggled to score and they will certainly do so against the tough defense of the USWNT.
Pick: United States

Saturday, June 27th
Japan vs. Australia - FS1, 4:00
The Matildas have been a big surprise to get to the quarterfinals after a major upset of the Brazilians but will their wild run end against the defending champions? I am inclined to say yes, unfortunately. I think Japan can effectively slow down the attack of Australia and that will be the difference.
Pick: Japan

England vs. Canada - FS1, 7:30
This should be a fun one if only because the hosts are involved. I find this to be a tough game to pick because England had had a decent offensive attack while the Canadians are doing a very good job keeping the ball out of their own net. I think the pressure of being the host will finally get to Canada and allow the Brits to slide by.
Pick: England
