Watch the Sprint Unlimited pace car catch on fire

Remember when Juan Pablo Montoya crashed into a jet dryer in 2012 Daytona 500 (the Monday night special)? Well, we have officially topped that, if not come very close, with tonight's Sprint Unlimited. Tonight, the pace car caught on fire. Let's go to the videotape because it is too damn good to keep from the people.

2014 NASCAR Nationwide Series Season Predictions

It was the best championship race in the top NASCAR series last year, and it was Austin Dillon who edged Sam Hornish, Jr. by three points to win the Nationwide Series title even without any victories. But now Dillon is on to the Sprint Cup Series, and Hornish is running part-time for Joe Gibbs Racing, and thus now it looks like a series that is wide open for the title. And beyond that, it is a bit of a transitional series as Nationwide Insurance is on its final year as title sponsor (but will be expanding their involvement in NASCAR). So who will win the Nationwide Series in 2014? Here are my predictions.

2014 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Season Predictions

What a season it was in 2013 for Matt Crafton in the Camping World Truck Series, as it obviously is when you win the title, but Crafton was a marvel of consistency all season long. He did not finish outside of the top ten for the first 16 races, and he made history by being the first ever driver to finish every lap, going 3391 for 3391. And for a veteran like him that had been close before, it was all made sweeter. Pretty good for a guy I said in last year's preview "may not be a title driver" after picking him to win it in 2012.

Can Crafton repeat and be the first driver to go back-to-back? Or will we see somebody else break through to win it all? Here are my 2014 CWTS predictions.

The new Slam Dunk Contest format is silly

The 2014 NBA Slam Dunk contest will have one of the strongest fields in years, as pictured above, and will also be the first dunk contest since the glory days of 1988 that there has been three All-Stars in the field (George, Wall, Lillard). But also with the strong field comes an absurd new format that will help to undercut what the dunk contest is all about.

What Michael Sam coming out means

(USA Today Sports)
An openly gay NFL player may be coming to a stadium near you this fall. Missouri defensive end Michael Sam, considered to a be a second or early third day pick in this year's NFL draft, said in interviews with both the New York Times and ESPN that he is gay. Sam came out to his teammates in August before an excellent senior season where he led the SEC in sacks, was named an All-American and the SEC Defensive Player of the Year, and his own teammates voted him team MVP.

Now he is likely to become the first openly gay player in the history of the National Football League. Here is what that means.

Marcus Smart shoved a Texas Tech fan during loss in Lubbock

The talk surrounding Texas Tech's 65-61 upset of Oklahoma State has surrounded a controversial incident featuring Cowboys star guard Marcus Smart. After Smart flew into the stands after fouling the Red Raiders' Jaye Crockett on a dunk attempt with six seconds remaining, Smart exchanged words with a Texas Tech fan before pushing him before teammates eventually restrained him.

Sounds like an open and shut case, no? No, because it turns out what the man said is what set Smart off.

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is poised for the strongest rookie class in years

(Getty Images)
Let's be honest, in recent years, the Sprint Cup Rookie of the Year crop have been pretty mediocre. Before the field rebounded last year with Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. edging out his girlfriend Danica Patrick for the award, the previous three winners of the award were Stephen Leicht (who was starting and parking much of the year and only started 15 races), Andy Lally (with a best finish of 19th), and Kevin Conway (who had one finish higher than 27th).

But this year's crop looks to be different. It's the largest rookie crop in several years with a strong eight entries. And the cream of the crop looks to be quite good when you break the class down.
