2014 Kentucky Derby Picks

This Saturday will be the 140th edition of the "Run for the Roses" at Churchill Downs. There is a reason why they call it "The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports" and we will see in Louisville this Saturday for sure. The first leg of the Triple Crown is at stake and who will prevail? Here are my predictions for the 2014 Kentucky Derby.

Live Odds

WIN: California Chrome (2-1)
Alas, it is never a popular pick to select the heavy favorite, nor is history on my side as only five times as the favorite gone on to win the race. However, California Chrome is the kind of colt that can break the trend. He was tremendously dominant at Santa Anita and has been excellent since Victor Espinoza, who jockeyed War Emblem to victory in 2002, took the reins and has won every race. And sometimes, playing it safe can be a little risky as well.

PLACE: Intense Holiday (13-1)
It is well known the fate of Louisville owners in the Derby as they have not won about a century. But Intense Holiday is poised for a strong run this Saturday. He has not been a consistent performer been he has ran well of late with a win and a couple top-three finishes on the year. This is a horse than should run well on the longer distance of Churchill Downs and drew a favorable post position of 16th.

SHOW: Ride on Curlin (15-1)
This horse finished second at Arkansas and when you have a jockey like Calvin Borel on the reins, you will always have a shot to win come Saturday. Not to mention, we also have another set of Louisville owners. Ride on Curlin has been a consistent performer and will certainly be in the mix to win even if he comes up just a little bit short.
