2013 Preakness Stakes Picks

We are on to Baltimore and the Second Jewel of the Triple Crown with this Saturday of the 138th Preakness Stakes. Kentucky Derby winner Orb is the heavy favorite at Pimlico Race Course, can he keep his hopes of being the first Triple Crown winner since 1978 alive? Or will we see a big upset? Here are my trifecta picks.

Win: Orb (1-1)
As expected, Orb is the clear favorite but he could be in for a tough race this Saturday considering he drew Gate 1, which is of course on the rail. Historically, that is a tough spot to win from but I still like Orb, particularly as there is a significant chance that we see rainy conditions like we saw two weeks ago in Louisville. He also will take advantage of a less than stellar field.

Place: Will Take Charge (12-1)
I think that Will Take Charge is going to surprise a lot of folks on raceday and I think that just like in the Derby, an underdog will come out of nowhere to finish in second. Don't forget that this horse was matching strides early with Orb before falling off pace. He has an ideal starting spot with Gate 7, which he has shown a lot of success from before.

Show: Departing (6-1)
Departing is considered to be one of the top challengers to potentially knock off Orb and while I don't think this horse will get there, he should be a contender. Given that this horse did not run in the Derby, he is a bit of a wild card but given that it is well-rested without having to race in the slop and when we last saw him, he won the Illinois Derby, Departing will very much be in the mix come Saturday.
