Watch Florida State Upset Duke at the Horn

What a wild finish it was at Cameron Indoor Stadium today between the Florida State Seminoles and the fourth ranked Duke Blue Devils. Let's go to the videotape and see Duke tie it and Florida State win it in the last five seconds to end Duke's 45-game winning streak in Durham.

CBS Sports Must Apologize for Falsely Reporting Death of Joe Paterno UPDATE

You may have seen an obituary for Joe Paterno on this blog. I wrote that obituary following CBS Sports' report that Paterno had died as it had been reported first by Onward State, which is almost like the Penn State student paper. But CBS Sports was the only one to report his death as all other sites did not report it. The Paterno family spokesman said that he had not died and then Paterno's sons Scott and Jay said the same. CBS Sports then retracted its report and then I took down my obituary.
What CBS should do is apologize for getting the story wrong. Reporting that somebody had died is not something you can get wrong under any circumstances. They can't point the blame to Onward State because I'm sure ESPN, Yahoo, the AP saw that same report and did not report that Paterno had died.
I apologize for prematurely writing my Paterno obituary and CBS should do the same.
UPDATE: CBS has apologized. Here's their statement.

Clint Dempsey Becomes 1st American-Born to Score Hat Trick in the EPL

A milestone today for English Premier League soccer today as Fulham midfielder Clint Dempsey, one of the stars for US Soccer, became the first American-born to score three goals in a game while leading his club to a 5-2 victory over Newcastle after the team trailed 1-0 at half-time. He was magnificent today, even as the first goal of the three was a little lucky. This is Dempsey's second hat trick in the last couple of weeks as he scored three goals against Charlton Athletic in the FA Cup. Let's go to the videotape to see the history that was made today at Craven Cottage.

Will Matt Flynn Follow Joe Philbin to the Dolphins?

As soon as it was announced that Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin was hired as the next head coach of the Miami Dolphins, speculation has swirled about whether Matt Flynn, the free agent backup quarterback of the Green Bay Packers, will follow him. Flynn is due to make himself a nice chunk of money as he's 26, so many teams need quarterbacks and the basis of his first-ever NFL start when he set team records for passing yards and touchdown passes in the season finale against the Detroit Lions. So is he bound for Miami Gardens?

DeAndre Jordan Sings, Poorly, for All-Star Votes

Players have always done fun things to try to get your votes to get them into the NBA All-Star Game, Chris Bosh and Rudy Gay being notable examples. And Clippers center DeAndre Jordan is no different, although his way if far less orginal than the others. He will sing for your votes. Albeit poorly and not actually singing anything besides asking you for your vote, he is singing. So kudos to him. Let's go to the videotape.

Watch the Wild Finish to Timberwolves-Clippers Last Night

It sure was one hell of a finish at Staples Center last night in the matchup of the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Los Angeles Clippers. Even as the Timberwolves were down as much as 15 in the third quarter, they found themselves within three late in the fourth. Ricky Rubio then hit a three to tie the game with 20 seconds left (yes Rubio made a jumper) and after Chauncey Billups was unable to finish at the rack, Kevin Love hit a threeball at the horn for the W. Let's go to the videotape.

Could Jim Tressel Actually Be in the Mix for the Colts Job?

The Indianapolis Colts are looking to hire a head coach are finally deciding to fire the buffoon that was Jim Caldwell. And thus they have discussed some names around like Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, Titans defensive coordinator Jerry Gray, Saints offensive coordinator Mike Carmichael Jr., even former Vikings head coach Brad Childress. But one curious name has apparently been interviewed by Colts owner Jim Irsay and that is current team consultant and former Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel. Could he be a serious candidate for this job?

Watch a Pane of Glass Fall on an NHL Referee in Pittsburgh

Referees always have to be on their toes and keep their eyes open because when you are in the thick of the action anything can happen. Hockey referees especially. And try telling that now to NHL referee Kevin Pollock, who saw a pane of glass at the Consol Energy Center wipe him out after Eric Tangradi of the Penguins and Alexei Emelin of the Canadiens collided into the glass moments before. You won't believe this, let's go to the videotape.

Miami Dolphins Hire Joe Philbin as Head Coach

It has been a very tough month for Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin, as his son was tragically found dead on Jaunary 9th after having been reported missing the prior night, but it has gotten better as he has been hired as head coach of the Miami Dolphins. Philbin had been offensive coordinator for the Packers since 2007.

Everybody knows that the Dolphins' top choice was Jeff Fisher but they regained their footing once he spurned them for the St. Louis Rams and made a solid, if unspectacular, hire in Philbin. The 50 year-old did not call plays for the Packers, that was the duty of head coach Mike McCarthy, but he was responsible for creating the gameplan, similar to what Gary Kubiak did in Denver under Mike Shanahan. The offense has been among the top ten in the league every year Philbin has been the offensive coordinator and most notably won the Super Bowl last year. The key for him in Miami will be to help some pop to a mostly-punchless offense and he may try to do that by bringing in Matt Flynn to play quarterback.

Should Peyton Manning Retire?

Lost in the absurdities of Rob Lowe trying to pull his best Jay Glazer on Wednesday in "reporting" that Peyton Manning will retire is the question of whether or not should Manning retire or come back to play in 2012, in all likelihood for another team. Here are my thoughts.

Did Dick's Sporting Goods Jinx the New York Giants?

H/T Reddit
Certainly appears like it. And now Giants fans know who to blame if the San Francisco 49ers win on Sunday afternoon.

Watch LeBron James Nearly Take Out Miami Marlins Owner Jeffrey Loria

Players just seem to crash into people on TNT. And in tonight's Lakers-Heat game, LeBron James did just that as he almost took the shyster that is Miami Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria. Let's go to the videotape.

LaDainian Tomlinson on Jets' Locker Room: "As Bad as I've Ever Been Around"

Much has been written about how the locker room of the New York Jets fell apart this season and LaDainian Tomlinson surely did not mince words in an interview on Inside the NFL on Showtime, saying that it was "as bad as I've ever been around, honestly." Tomlinson, who is a free agent to be if he chooses not to retire, also said how "this is the type of football team [general manager Mike Tannenbaum and head coach Rex Ryan] wanted" and he also added that things got "out-of-hand toward the end of the season," in all likelihood during the club's three game losing streak to end the season out of the playoffs.
Let's go to the videotape.

Glen Davis Protests Call by Dropping his Pants, Receives Technical

We have seen a wide variety of ways that NBA players have shown their disgust with a call but this is certainly a new one.

Not sure what Glen Davis was thinking there...

2012 NFL Mock Draft: 4th Edition

Heisman Trophy recipient Robert Grffin III and his socks will be a hot commodity in the 2012 NFL Draft. With teams needing a quarterback so badly and the superb talents that Griffin brings to the table, he will be in high demand. That could potentially mean somebody (like Cleveland or Washington) trading up for him. Continue reading to see where I think all of the elite talents of this NFL draft will end up.

Rob Lowe: Hearing Peyton Manning Will Retire

Maybe Lowe knows something actual NFL insiders, and the Colts beat writers, don't. After all, the first person Colts owner Jim Irsay followed on Twitter was Lowe.
But Archie Manning, Peyton's father, apparently laughed when he heard that Lowe said that. So there goes that.

2013 NHL Winter Classic: Maple Leafs vs. Red Wings at Michigan Stadium

MLive.com is reporting that the 2013 Winter Classic will be between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Detroit Red Wings on New Year's Day at the largest stadium in America, Michigan Stadium as pictured above. It will be expected to draw record NHL crowds of over 110,000 (largest Winter Classic crowd is 71,217 at the original Winter Classic in Orchard Park, NY) due to the rabid fanbases of both Original Six teams, as well as the proximity to Toronto to the area. This will also be the first time a Canadian team will be featured in the Winter Classic as only American teams, at the request of NBC, have been featured. This will be the second Winter Classic the Red Wings will have been in, having won the 2009 Winter Classic at Wrigley Field 6-4 over the Chicago Blackhawks.
I'm loving this move and so is Puck Daddy's Greg Wyshynski and here are his reasons.

Flip Saunders Should Be Fired But Wizards' Problems Run Deeper

Yeah, it's getting bad for the District's NBA team. Unfortunately the new uniforms have not brought success to the Washington Wizards as they sit right now at 1-12. The team has just been god awful all season with Ball Don't Lie's Kelly Dwyer saying that some observers have called them "the absolute dumbest team they've ever seen."
So what should be done? Well coach Flip Saunders should be fired but he's not the only problem in Washington.

World Series Champion St. Louis Cardinals Visit the White House

Today, as per tradition, the World Series Champions, the St. Louis Cardinals, visited the White House and the President for a fun photo op. Continue reading for some pictures with members of the team with President Obama and the First Lady.

Jim Caldwell Fired By Colts

The Indianapolis Colts, following one of the most disastrous seasons in franchise history mostly caused by the devastating injury to Peyton Manning, have fired their clueless head coach, Jim Caldwell. They are the fifth team to fire their head coach and this was probably what should have been the most obvious choice. Yes it's not his fault that Manning got injured and that the team had no decent option in place, but if you've watched any Colts game the last few years, you saw a guy who had no idea how to coach, called inane timeouts and just looked completely lost. So what took so long to fire the guy? There were rumors of late that the team was actually going to keep Caldwell but it is nice to see they finally came to their senses.
Whoever will be hired by the new Colts front office leadership will have the pleasure of coaching Andrew Luck but now the question of what the team will do with Peyton Manning remains unanswered for now.

My 2012 Pro Football Hall of Fame Ballot

In two and a half weeks, the Board of Selectors for the Pro Football Hall of Fame will convene in Indianapolis to vote on a Hall of Fame Class of 2012. Unfortunately I am not a member of this selection committee but here is my ballot. Let's take a look.

Detroit Pistons' Plane Made Emergency Landing Earlier Today

The team charter of the Detroit Pistons was forced to make an emergency landing today at William P. Hobby Airport in Houston today. The Detroit Free Press reported that a hydraulic issue forced emergency personnel to greet the aircraft and passengers were not aware of any problem until emergency vehicles greeted the plane on the tarmac. The aircraft landed without incident and no injuries were reported. The plane was headed for Houston as the team was going to take on the Rockets tomorrow night.
Fortunately this did not turn into something serious.

Watch Blake Griffin Smother Kris Humphries

Kris Humphries has not had a great go of it of late. He's getting ruthlessly mocked by fans, who all seem to buy the spin that his ex is spouting about him, and while he's had a good season statistically speaking, his Nets squad are a cool 3-11. And he's been dunked all over by Blake Griffin. Consider it a coronation. Let's go to the videotape.

Watch Alex Ovechkin Drop Some Rap Lyrics in Russian

Because who doesn't love some Russian raping? We all do so check out Alex Ovechkin being sampled in the just released "Champion" by Sasha Belyi. If only Ovechkin was, you know, a champion but alas. Let's go to the videotape.
His piece begins at 3:00. H/T Puck Daddy

2012 NFL Playoffs: Conference Championship Game Picks

Two teams are left in both the National Football Conference and in the American Football Conference. The four teams that are still alive (the Giants and 49ers in the NFC; the Ravens and Patriots in the AFC) are just one victory away from reaching Super Bowl XLVI. Who will be advancing to Indianapolis for a chance at taking home the Lombardi Trophy?

Watch Hakeem Nicks' Absurd Hail Mary Grab

The New York Giants will be heading out to Candlestick to take on the San Francisco 49ers after defeating the top seeded Green Bay Packers today at Lambeau and one of the biggest reasons why was the absurd Hail Mary touchdown reception for Hakeem Nicks right before halftime. After the Packers for some reason called timeout after the Giants seemed to be content going to the half, Ahmad Bradshaw broke for a big run and then Eli Manning tossed one up for Nicks, who had an awesome game, who brought it down for the touchdown. It gave the G-Men a 20-10 lead at the intermission and Green Bay never recovered. Let's go to the videotape.
