2012 Kentucky Derby Picks

There is no place in America quite like Churchill Downs and there is nothing quite like the Kentucky Derby. The 138th running of the Derby is this Saturday with the race scheduled to start at 5 p.m. Who are my picks in the race and who will win the roses?

Post Positions

Win: Take Charge Indy (10/1)
The pedigree for Take Charge Indy is one that breeds horses with strong stamina as the offspring of A.P. Indy have an average winning distance of 8.2 furloughs, which bodes extremely well on the mile and a half of Churchill Downs. What also bodes well for Take Charge Indy is his jockey, Calvin Borel, as he has won the Derby three times before and he is known very well for riding the rail and given the favorable post position of third, there's a lot to take. Take Charge Indy. He's my pick to win.

Place: El Padrino (26/1)
It's looking as if it will rain on Saturday in Louisville as of right now as there is chance of isolated thunderstorms throughout the weekend. Keeping that in mind, that's why I'm high on El Padrino, who ran his best and most dominant race on a wet track last year at Belmont Park and he is one of the best colts in the field on a wet surface. Considering it looks like there will be a wet surface, El Padrino is a good bet.

Show: Union Rags (5/1)
Union Rags has been considered one of the favorites, if not the favorite, of the field this year. This colt is one of the more consistent of those in the field since he debuted at Sarotoga in August. What also bodes well for those placing bets on Union Rags is that its jockey, Julien Leparoux, is one of the more patient riders in the field that is very adept at judging the pace early on.
