How good are the Murray State Racers?

Steve Prohm and the Racers of Murray State University are the only undefeated team left in college basketball (bet you saw this one coming) at 21-0. Right now they are ranked tenth in the Associated Press Top 25. So the question is, how good are they?

There is no question that this veteran team led by guards Isaiah Canaan, Donte Poole and forward Ivan Aska is a pretty solid team, considering the fact that they have yet to lose a game this season, an impressive feat for anybody this late in the season. And this is a team that two years ago upset Vanderbilt in the first round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament and came close to knocking off Butler in the second round, who ended up losing in the National Championship Game, and last year was an NIT team.

But nobody really knows how good this Murray State team is because quite frankly, they have not really played anybody this season. The Ohio Valley Conference has been pretty weak this season with no other team sans Murray State with more than 14 victories and only two clubs with less than ten losses, also sans Murray State. Their best win has probably at Memphis, and that is a team that has disappointed this season after coming in with high expectations.

The only real test that the Racers have the rest of this season will be on February 16th in a Bracketbusters showdown at home against a very good Saint Mary's team. That will be by no means an easy win and should be an excellent game. If Murray State is able to hold on in that game, they have an excellent change to enter the NCAA Tournament undefeated, the first team to do so since UNLV in 1991. But with only one very good victory all season if they enter the tourney without a loss, how deep they go in March is unclear.
