Conference USA & Mountain West to dissolve, form new league

Brett McMurphy of CBS Sports has reported that Conference USA and the Mountain West conference has decided to dissolve their respective conferences and create their own as yet to be titled conference. The new conference will start with the 2013-14 academic year while both conferences would remain as is for the 2012-13 academic year.

The league will have 15 members for all sports (Air Force, Colorado State, East Carolina, Fresno State, Nevada, New Mexico, Southern Mississippi, Tulane, Tulsa, UAB, UNLV and UTEP) with Hawaii as a football-only member.

This arrangement is likely to help both conferences survive as both have been pillaged over the past couple of years with BYU going independent last year, TCU leaving for the Big XII while the Big East took both Boise State and San Diego State from the Mountain West while they also took Central Florida, Houston, Southern Methodist and most recently Memphis from Conference USA.
