2011 MLB Postseason: Detroit Tigers Advance to the ALCS

The Detroit Tigers jumped on Ivan Nova and the New York Yankees early with solo home runs by Don Kelly and Delmon Young in the first inning and never relinquished the lead, defeating New York 3-2 to take the ALDS 3-2 and are now advancing to the American League Championship Series to take on the Texas Rangers. Victor Martinez singled in Austin Jackson in the top of the fifth to give Detroit a 3-0 lead. Robinson Cano gave the Yankees hope by hitting a solo shot in the bottom half and then Tigers reliever Joaquin Benoit walked in a run in the seventh but that was the only run he gave up. Jose Valverde then came in the bottom of the ninth and promptly slammed the door on the game, sending Detroit to the ALCS for the first time since winning the pennant in 2006.
