Sarah Palin Hooked Up With Glen Rice in 1987? Best Story Ever?

If you have not heard this completely out of the blue news, the National Enquirer is running a story that a tidbit from the Sarah Palin book written by Joe McGinniss says that while she was a sports anchor in Anchorage, Alaska she hooked up with then Michigan hoops star Glen Rice in 1987 when his Wolverines were in Anchorage for a tournament. This was less than a year before she married her current husband, Todd.  Granted this is the National Enquirer we are talking about but this isn't news they just make up out of nowhere as usual but that's it's coming from a book. And apparently in writing the book, the author quotes Rice as confirming the hookup. He also mentions the fact that Palin, then Sarah Heath, had a fetish for black men. I kid you not.
From the Enquirer:
Sarah hooked up with the NBA great, then a 6-foot-8 junior at the University of Michigan when he was playing in a college basketball tournament in Alaska in 1987, the book says. At the time, Sarah, just out of college, was working as a sports reporter for the Anchorage TV station KTUU.
A publishing source told The ENQUIRER that McGinniss claims Sarah had a ‘fetish’ for black men at the time and he quotes a friend as saying Sarah had ‘hauled (Rice’s) ass down.”

This is quite frankly one of the most hilarious, bizarre, and random stories ever. And I love it all.  The fact that before her stark political rise from unknown governor of a far-away state to becoming one of the most well known politicians in the world she had a "fetish" for African-American men and hooked up with one of the best Michigan hoops players ever but also someone from which we have not heard anything from in years.
She was 23 at the time and a former beauty queen and solid hoops player. He was 20 and obivously still in college. So it's not like she was so much older than he was. But it's still so bizarre.
Here's a CW anchor refering to the former Governor to having a "thang for chocolate" which may be more bizarre than the piece itself. Courtesy SportsGrid.

Note that while nobody knows what exact date their fling occured, we do have the stats of Rice during that Anchorage tournament in late November of 1987. (courtesy Deadspin).

  • vs. Miami: 22 points and 6 boards
  • vs. Arizona: 15 points and six turnovers
  • vs. UAB: 27 points
