Grant Novak the Hero as Highlands Rallies to Beat Wayne Valley, 8-7

This season, Grant "Itis" Novak has mostly been used as a defensive replacement for Northern Highlands and has not had a lot of opportunities to strut his stuff at the plate. In fact in today's game against Wayne Valley, he was not in the starting lineup. But after Sameer Ganju was pulled and centerfielder Billy Taylor became the man on the hill, Novak took Ganju's place in the lineup and Taylor's spot in center. Amd it turned out to work wonders as he hit the game-winning triple that scored John Hinchen as Highlands rallied from a 7-1 deficit to win 8-7.
This Highlands varsity club has shown tremendous resiliency in 2011 as multiple times their bats have come alive and they have rallied to comeback victories. And today was no different against a solid Wayne Valley club that is top ranked in Passaic County. This time the aluminum came alive in the 5th inning where the Highlanders seemingly hit triple after triple as they cut the lead down to one, then were able to tie the game.
Taylor, who came in as a relief pitcher, did not allow any runs and made a very clutch stomp on first on a bang-bang play to end the top of the sixth after first baseman Brandon Ulloa fielded a grounder.
What causes this late-game magic? It seems to be when yours truly switches with failed blogger Jeff Parles to take over the scorebook. It looks like I will be doing a lot more book the balance of the season.
Grant Novak is the hero as Highlands moves to 12-9 as the season slowly wraps. For all news and scores for Highlands varsity baseball, bang it here to B-FLO 360, the official blog of Highlands baseball.
