Could Mike Shanahan Get Fired This Offseason?

It seems that every coach in the NFC East is on the hot seat but you haven't heard that much about Mike Shanahan down in Washington and his job security (or maybe I'm going deaf). But could he actually get the axe from owner, the beloved, Dan Snyder?

A Terrell Owens Sighting? Great?

In case you don't remember who Terrell Owens, he was that great NFL receiver that was also a bitch who drove himself out of San Francisco, Philadelphia and Dallas whilst burning his bridges out of each while not making much of a mark in one-year terms in Buffalo and Cincinnati. He also was the star of shows that nobody watched on VH1 and Versus but of late has been sitting on his coach, waiting for offers to come.
And so it appears that Owens does have an offer for the 2012 season from...Allen Wranglers of the Indoor Football League. I'll let you take a shot of something alcoholic and we'll discuss after the jump.
UPDATE: It's official, Owens will be playing for the Allen Wranglers.

Watch Kevin Durant's Epic Game Winner Against Dallas

Down by one with 1.4 on the clock. Who is Oklahoma City gonna turn to? Who do you think? Here's Kevin Durant's awesome buzzer beater to knock off the Dallas Mavericks as well as Marv Albert's awesome call.

And yes the NBA is back WITH A VENGEANCE. I'm real glad I jut happened to turn on this game right before this happened. I also had a 32 ounce Mountain Dew so I'm feeling it.

Who Will Be the Next Head Coach at Penn State?

There is only one FBS head coaching vacancy that has not been filled on the coaching carousel and it happens to be the one that opened in possibly the ugliest way, the dismissal of the legendary Joe Paterno as a result of the Jerry Sandusky sexual abuse scandal. It is a job filled with loads of traditions but with one very large black eye that has turned candidates off. So who will be the next coach in State College?

2011 NFL on Fox Announcers & Distribution: Week 17

It is the final week of the 2011 NFL season. Up next, it's playoff action. You know you have to tune in this Sunday as there are still playoff spots to be decided. Here are the games on Fox this Sunday, who will be calling them and which game you will be getting on your television and as always, a link to the brilliant distribution maps from The506.

2011 NFL Week 17 Picks

It's the final week of the regular season for the 2011 edition of National Football League action. We've still got plenty to be decided. The Cowboys and the Giants face off in a winner take all showdown in the Meadowlands for the NFC East. The AFC West is still up in the air. There are still some teams in the mix for a Wild Card spot in the AFC. Who's gonna get in the playoff mix? My playoff picks RIGHT NOW.

To Rest or Not to Rest: Should Teams Rest Players?

We deal with this issue every NFL season as teams have clinched their playoff spots, division titles, byes, etc. should they rest their starters and how much should they rest them. Here are my thoughts.

2011 NFL Season: Predicting the Playoff Picture after Week 15

There are only two weeks left in the 2011 NFL season and still much to be decided in both conferences with four clinched teams in the AFC and three in the NFC. The wildest races seem to be in the AFC West, the NFC East and both wild cards. Who do I think will make the dance?

2011-12 NBA Season Preview & Predictions

There has been a large amount of focus on boardrooms like the one pictured above over the summer and fall as the NBA Lockout was forefront on the minds of basketball fans nationwide. But now, the season was saved, there will be professional hoops this year. So how do I foresee the shortened NBA season to shape out?

20 December 2011

2011 NFL Week 16 Picks

No game this week in the NFL may be more important than Jets-Giants. The Jets need the win to solidify their position for a wild card slot in the AFC while the Giants need the win to solidify their lead in the NFC East over the Cowboys. In this battle for New Jersey (both teams are Jersey teams...sorry), who will prevail? It's time for my week 16 NFL picks.

2011 NFL on Fox Announcers & Distribution: Week 16

JB Smoove loves himself some NFL on Fox action. Hell he wants to be the third man in the booth. Well we got a doubleheader on Fox Sports with the early games being Giants-Jets, Rams-Steelers, Cardinals-Bengals, Vikings-Redskins and Buccaneers-Panthers with the late games being Eagles-Cowboys and 49ers-Cardinals. Continue reading for announcing assignments and distribution splits courtesy JP of The506 for the NFL on Fox this Saturday.

2011 NFL on CBS Announcers & Distribution: Week 16

Is there is one thing we have learned this year on CBS, it's that Kris Jenkins throws a god awful Halloween party. Now that we got that done with, CBS Sports has a singleheader slate this week with six games on the docket. They are Broncos-Bills, Dolphins-Patriots, Browns-Ravens, Raiders-Chiefs, Jaguars-Titans and Chargers-Lions. Continue reading for announcing assignments as well as distribution splits from the great JP of The506 for this Saturday on CBS.

Why the Packers Losing Could Actually Be of Benefit

The dreams of 16-0 by Mike McCarthy and the Green Bay Packers are now dead following a shocking 19-14 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, who manhandled them all game. If the Chiefs did not stagnate in the red zone early on, the game would not have been close.
But here is why the loss may actually come out to benefit the Packers.

Jesus Tells Tim Tebow To Lay Off the Jesus

In case you have not realized, Tim Tebow is a devoutly religious person, just like Rick Perry. But is he a little too religious? Well that is what Jesus himself thinks as He told Tebow himself last night on Saturday Night Live to lay off the Jesus act. To the videotape, courtesy SportsGrid.

2012 NFL Mock Draft: 1st Edition

It's my first mock draft of the season as so many clubs are already looking ahead to the 2012 NFL Draft to help turn their fortunes. Andrew Luck is the presumptive top choice at this point but how do I think the draft will shake out? Why, let's take a look.

15 December 2011

Is Rick Perry the 'Tim Tebow' of the Iowa Caucuses?

This actually happened. Texas Governor Rick Perry, whose candidacy for the Republican  nomination for President has sunken after flying so high at the start of his campaign and now he is trying to build his support back up as we near the Iowa Caucuses on January 3rd, declared that he was the 'Tim Tebow' of the Iowa Caucuses. And no, I have no idea what the hell that means. Let's go to the videotape.

Chris Paul Traded to the Clippers, Gordon, Kamen, Aminu, Pick to New Orleans

Chris Paul is finally headed out of the Big Easy. The NBA, orchestrating trade negotiations after the controversial shutdown of the Paul trade to the Los Angeles Lakers, agreed to a deal with the Los Angeles Clippers for Eric Gordon, Chris Kamen, Al-Farouq Aminu and a first round draft pick from the Minnesota Timberwolves. What does this trade mean for both teams?

Breaking Down the New NFL TV Contract

The National Football League has just announced a new television contract with its over-the-air partners, CBS, Fox and NBC through the 2022 NFL season. Here are the key details of the new deal, the first without a new TV partner since Fox gained the rights to the NFC in 1993.

2011 NFL Season: Predicting the Playoff Picture after Week 14

So we got three weeks left of the 2011 NFL season. Here is how I think the playoff picture will end up for those last three weeks, with the help of ESPN's trusty playoff machine.

Mikhail Prokhorov Running for President of Russia?

So you have probably heard that the owner of the New Jersey (soon to be Brooklyn) Nets, the Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov, announced he is running for President of Russia against, among other candidates, Prime Minister and former President Vladimir Putin. So what does this announcement mean for the Nets?

2011 NFL Week 15 Picks

Patriots vs. Broncos. Tom Brady vs. Tim Tebow. Who will win that showdown? Here are my week 15 picks.

Craig James Running for US Senate in Texas

The man who helped orechestrate Mike Leach's firing at Texas Tech is now running for the United States Senate, naturally. ESPN broadcaster and former SMU star running back Craig James will file today to run for the Republican nomination for the Senate seat currently held by Kay Bailey Hutchinson, who will be retiring at the end of her current term.
James has been suspected of running for the seat for a while now and will be in for an interesting race for the nomination considering his name recognition and his lack of political experience. Texas Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst had led most of the GOP primary polling thus far so it will be interesting to see how James starts off at in the next poll.
Not to mention to get this terrible analyst off of ESPN, who must be happy they don't have to worry about people getting furious at the fact he was still employed.

12 December 2011

Tony Sparano Fired by Dolphins

We now have the third fired head coach of the 2011 NFL season, including the second of the day, in Tony Sparano, who was relieved by the Miami Dolphins today. The Dolphins had won four out of five after starting the season off losing their first seven games but lost to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday by a 26-10 score and the game was not even that close. Sparano earned a lot of praise leading the previously one win Dolphins to a division title in his first year on the job in 2008 but had two consecutive 7-9 seasons, which would have been the best he could have done this year. He entered the season on very tenuous grounds in Miami Gardens after receiving a half-assed contract extension after owner Stephen Ross chased around Jim Harbaugh like a dog (or Jeff Parles) chasing the mailman (or Jeff Parles). Sparano leaves South Florida with a 29-32 record. Assistant head coach and defensive backs coach Todd Bowles will be the interim coach.

Todd Haley Fired by Chiefs

It's been a topsy-turvy year thus far for the Kansas City Chiefs. They started off the year 0-3, during which I labeled them clearly the worst team in football. Then they rattled off a four game winning streak and took the lead in the AFC Worst West. But now they have lost five out of six, sitting at 5-8 after a thorough beatdown in the Meadowlands on Sunday and head coach Todd Haley has gotten the axe. The Chiefs went 19-26 in two plus years in the Haley tenure, one that experienced lows and a high of winning the division last year but as Haley has struggled to find an offensive coordinator he could get along with, as Matt Cassel continued to suck and injuries to many key players took its toll, this is not a surprise. Romeo Crennel will be the interim coach for the balance of the year.
As for what is next for Haley, I'd surprised if he did not become an offensive coordinator for some team next year. I have a feeling Jets fans, who rail on Brian Schottenheimer like it's their job (and probably is), will be pulling for him to return to the Jets (worked in the organization from 1995-2000).

2011 NFL on CBS Announcers & Distribution: Week 15

This Sunday on CBS Sports will be a doubleheader slate comprised of three games in the early slot (Bengals-Rams, Titans-Colts and Dolphins-Bills) and three games in the late slot (Patriots-Broncos, Jets-Eagles and Browns-Cardinals). Continue reading for announcing assignments as well as distribution splits courtesy of JP of The506.

2011 NFL on Fox Announcers & Distribution: Week 15

Six games on your Fox network this Sunday and you will be watching one of them as Fox has a singleheader slate of action this week. The games are Redskins-Giants, Packers-Chiefs, Saints-Vikings, Seahawks-Bears and Panthers-Texans at 1:00 and Lions-Raiders at 4:05. Continue reading for announcing assignments and distribution splits.

Ryan Succop Fails Miserably at Onside Kick, Ian Eagle & Dan Fouts Love It

Ryan Succop of the Kansas City Chiefs is a pretty good kicker by all accounts. But unfortunately for him today while getting blown out by the New York Jets, he may have done the worst onside kick attempt ever. Ian Eagle and Dan Fouts of CBS found it hilarious. Let's go to the videotape.

Tom Brady & Patriots Offensive Coordinator Get in Shouting Match

There are not many things as painful as throwing an interception in the end zone, with the exception of hanging out with Ray McDowell. With his club only up by a score, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady threw a critical interception in the end zone. After that on the sidelines, he and offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien were not exactly in sympathetic mood. Let's go to the videotape.

Watch Indiana Shock Kentucky in Epic Buzzer Beater Finish

So yesterday in Bloomington, the Indiana Hoosiers upset the top ranked Kentucky Wildcasts 73-72 on a last second threeball. Watch Dick Vitale lose his mind and the guy operating the ESPN scoring graphic fail miserably. Let's go to the videotape.

What is Next for Kurt Busch?

The NASCAR silly season has only been going on but there is a big-time driver aavailable, a former Champion and a six-time Chase participant. He also has a bit of an anger issue and thus may not be as heavily courted as a driver as his driving skills have shown.
Penske Racing cut ties with Kurt Busch on Monday, it was official a mutual decision but in all likelihood he got axed, after what has been a tumultuous at times partnership, culminating in Busch being caught on camera verbally berating ESPN report Dr. Jerry Punch at the season finale race at Homestead-Miami Speedway. So what is Busch's next move as he tries to learn to better compose himself and his emotions as well as finding fun in racing again?

What the Aborted Chris Paul Trade Means for the NBA, Paul & Dwight Howard

The trade seemed to be a go; Chris Paul to the Lakers, Lamar Odom, Kevin Martin, Luis Scola, Goran Dragic and a first round pick to New Orleans, Pau Gasol to Houston. And then late last night, commissioner David Stern, seemingly under pressure from some of the league's owners, killed the deal. And so what are the ramifications of the killed trade for the NBA, Paul and New Orleans as well as for Dwight Howard?

Angels Alter AL West Landscape, Sign Pujols, Wilson

Pujols at Angel Stadium in 2010
The Miami Marlins may have gained all the early headlines of the 2011 Winter Meetings but thus far it is the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim that have may the biggest moves in signing the top bat, Albert Pujols, and top arm, C.J. Wilson, today. These huge moves show a new trend of business in Orange County as well as setting up some epic battles in the American League West.

2011-12 College Football Bowl Game Picks

Here are my predictions for each and every bowl game this winter. Buckle up for the greatness.

Alex Ovechkin Took PED's? Another Piece of Journalistic Failure to the Highest Degree

Few things piss my off more than media hacks and now you can officially count John Steigerwald of the Washington (PA) Observer-Reporter as another one of them. This was the guy that said that the man who was beating up badly at Dodgers Stadium should not have been wearing a Giants jersey to a game. So basically in short, the guy is a complete jackass who writes garbage to get readership.
So his latest stunt is blaming Alex Ovechkin's subpar season on performance enhancing drugs. Wow.

Who Will Win the Heisman Trophy in 2011?

It's the most prestigious award in all of collegiate athletics. Only the cream of the crop can receive it. The Heisman Trophy will be announced this Saturday and the winner will be one of those fortunate to receive an invitation to New York and they are RB Montee Ball of Wisconsin, QB Robert Griffin III of Baylor, QB Andrew Luck of Stanford, CB Tyrann Mathieu of LSU and RB Trent Richardson of Alabama. Who do I think will win?

2011 NFL Week 14 Picks

NFC East matchups always have a lot of meaning but the showdown between the New York Giants and the Dallas Cowboys at Cowboys Stadium has a pretty significant meaning in the divisional race. The Cowboys can solidify their control of the division while the Giants can make the race even tighter. Who will come out on top on Sunday evening? I pick that and all other games this week right now.

05 December 2011

2011-12 College Football Bowl Games

So the rematch is on. LSU and Alabama will battle in the National Championship Game after the BCS pairings were announced as with the rest of the bowl games. Here are the matchups.
I must say, I find it incredibly absurd that Virginia Tech is in the Sugar Bowl. This is a team that hasn't played anybody all year, gotten smoked by easily the best team they've played all year in Clemson twice including a beatdown in the ACC Championship Game. Why they got a BCS bid over Kansas State or even Boise State is a fraud.

2011 NFL on Fox Announcers & Distribution: Week 14

The NFL on Fox is coming at you this week hot and heavy with a seven game singleheader slate this Sunday. The games in the 1:00 window are Saints-Titans, Vikings-Lions, Eagles-Dolphins, Falcons-Panthers and Buccaneers-Jaguars with the games in the 4:05 window being Bears-Broncos and 49ers-Cardinals. Read on for announcing assignments and distribution splits for this week on Fox Sports.

2011 NFL on CBS Announcers & Distribution: Week 14

I hope you enjoy doubleheader action on NFL sundays because you'll be getting a deep dish of such this week on your local CBS affiliate (yes I am running out of material for this opens). The early games this week are Patriots-Redskins, Chiefs-Jets, Texans-Bengals and Colts-Ravens while the late games are Raiders-Packers and Bills-Chargers. Continue reading to find out who will be calling this matchups and which one(s) you will get in your market this Sunday.

2011-12 College Football Bowl Predictions: Final Edition

These are my last minute bowl game predictions before the matchups are announced on Sunday evening for all 35 bouts. I think it's obvious who I'm picking to play in the BCS National Championship Game, or at least one of the teams is.

Will Andy Reid Get Fired?

This was supposed to be the "Dream Team." The Miami Heat of the NFL, that would win the final game unlike those guys. And yet here they are at 4-8 after an embarrassing loss to the Seahawks on Thursday night and will end this week either in sole possession of last place in the NFC East or tied with the Washington Redskins in last. Talk about meeting expectations.
And as you would expect, Andy Reid, the longest tenured head coach in the NFL, is seeing many loud calls for his ouster. Can't say it's surprising, we are talking about Philadelphia sports fans. But will he get the axe?

02 December 2011

Want to Get Excited for the NBA to Come Back?

This is an epic commercial, spotlighting how the NBA, more specifically the New York Knicks, is back.

Any time you can use the excellent Marvin Gaye in brilliant context, that is always a win.
(h/t SportsGrid)

Is Chris Paul Headed for the Knicks?

Yahoo! Sports broke the story yesterday that star point guard Chris Paul of the New Orleans Hornets had requested a trade to the New York Knicks yesterday after announcing that he will not be re-signing with the team. Then came out reports that he had not requested a trade and that the rumors were unfounded. But you had to figure that it was inevitable that Paul would want out of New Orleans once he aligned himself with guys like Maverick Carter, Leon Rose and William Wesley. And it is clear that Paul wants to come to New York. But will it happen?

Learn Some Hebrew from Amar'e Stoudemire

Got some video of Knicks star Amar'e Stoudemire, one of the few NBA players to have Jewish ties, went on Sesame Street to teach us all how to say the word good in Hebrew. I thought this was good (I'm here all week). Let's go to the videotape.

2011-12 College Football Bowl Game Announcers

As with every bowl season, we've got much college football for you this month into January. Here's a list of who is calling each and every bowl game.

29 November 2011

Red Sox Make a Great Hire in Bobby Valentine

The Boston Red Sox have found their new manager and his name is Bobby Valentine. And quite frankly it is a tremendous hire.
I've been seeing a lot of angry response to the Valentine hire by Red Sox fans and I'm not sure why. He has a proven track record as a manager, has handled a big market a la Terry Francona before he Boston and can handle the clubhouse well and run a tight ship and have the players to love him at the same time. He's a charismatic and smart manager who knows the game of baseball very well (don't hold his awful, and I mean awful, tenure as an analyst against him). He knows how to push the right buttons and to get his teams to perform their best as his time with the Mets showed so he'll have the Red Sox right back in the thick of contention after two straight third place finishes in the AL East. What's not to like.

2011 NFL Week 13 Picks

Giants fans, remember when you guys defeated the Packers to advance to Super Bowl XLII, which you would eventually won? Packers fans, remember when you guys knocked the Giants out of the playoffs last year, setting the stage for your run to victory in Super Bowl XLV? Well it's the game of the week as these two clubs, one fighting for playoff position, the other possibly going for an undefeated season, will duke it out in the Meadowlands on Sunday. Who will win?
It's time for my week 13 picks.

Jack Del Rio Fired by Jaguars

The first NFL head coaching casualty is Jack Del Rio, who was fired today by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Del Rio figured to have a hot seat this year as it was essentially make the playoffs or lose your job and with the team at 3-8 after a 20-13 loss to the division leading Texans, it was all but over for Del Rio. This is Del rio's ninth year in Jacksonville and he has accumulated a 68-70 record with two playoff appearances but none since 2007 and only one finish at .500 since then. The Jaguars' offense has been increasingly stagnant as rookie quarterback Blaine Gabbert has really struggled since becoming the starter (which why you would draft a quarterback in the first round when you say you have to make the playoffs is pretty odd) and Del Rio of late has been throwing a lot of blame on offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter, which showed he felt that his time was about to be over. Defensive coordinator Mel Tucker will be the interim coach for the balance of the season.
Del Rio will presumably be a top contender for open defensive coordinator positions or could coach in college.

28 November 2011

Even Little Kids Want Andy Reid Fired

The calls for Andy Reid's head in Philadelphia are getting loud as his Eagles are floundering at 4-7 with their playoff dreams all but dead. In fact even three-year-olds want him gone. And they should probably pay DeSean Jackson as well. This had me rolling, let's go to the videotape.

2011 NFL on CBS Announcers & Distribution: Week 13

As we've entered the 13th week of the 2011 NFL season, CBS Sports presents a singleheader this Sunday with seven games on the schedule. Those are Bengals-Steelers, Raiders-Dolphins, Jets-Redskins, Patriots-Colts, Chiefs-Bears and Titans-Bills at 1:00 with Ravens-Browns at 4:05. Continue reading for announcing assignments and distribution splits this week on the Tiffany Network.

2011 NFL on Fox Announcers & Distribution: Week 13

It is week 13 of the 2011 NFL season already and Fox Sports has a doubleheader for you this Sunday. The early games are Falcons-Texans, Broncos-Vikings and Panthers-Buccaneers while the later games are Packers-Giants, Cowboys-Cardinals and Rams-49ers. Continue reading for announcing assignments and distribution splits for the NFL on Fox this Sunday.

2011-12 College Football Bowl Predictions after Week 13

We've got some conference championships to be determined this week (my picks here) with possibly nobody with as much to gain and lose as Houston, who can clinch a BCS bid by defeating Southern Miss in the C-USA Championship Game. If they lose, it could open the door for someone else. Also will we see a rematch in the title game and will someone win the Big East? It's time for my bowl game predictions.
